What Epithalon is
The pineal gland is a small gland in the brain that makes melatonin, the hormone of sleep. Epithalon was patterned on an extract of that gland from cattle and is now made in a lab.
A PubMed search done for these notes found 143 records under either spelling, and 90 share one author from a research institute in St. Petersburg. That group dominates the field.
Epithalon research, from cells to old monkeys
A team in Warsaw, Poland, from outside that group, looked back over a quarter century of lab and animal research in 2025 and pointed out how little is known about its basic chemistry. Also in 2025, a dish study measured telomeres, the protective caps at each end of a chromosome, in human cells given Epithalon, along with telomerase, the enzyme that builds them.
Older animal work comes from the same tradition. In 2005, old monkeys given Epithalon had their night-time melatonin and blood sugar measured. In 2002, mice bred to develop breast tumors were given Epithalon and followed for lifespan and tumors.
