Researchers in Basel, Switzerland, isolated DSIP in 1977 from rabbit blood drawn from veins draining the brain. Its full name is delta sleep-inducing peptide.
DSIP is made of 9 amino acids. In 2006, a review judged its tie to sleep weak, noting that no gene or receptor for it has been found.

The DSIP sleep studies, side by side
The 1987 study tracked sleep in a lab across 7 nights in 14 middle-aged people who had long-term, severe insomnia, comparing DSIP with a placebo on sleep and on alertness during the day.
The 1992 study, with 16 insomnia patients, was double-blind: patients and staff were both kept from knowing who got what, and it measured sleep the same way. Its authors judged that DSIP, as tested there, is not likely to make much difference to insomnia.
Seven nights in the 1987 study is a short window for a long-term problem, and the 1992 study was only a little larger.

DSIP got its name before anyone understood its job, and close to 50 years later the job is still unclear. No gene or receptor has turned up. So the name is a hope from 1977, not a finding.
Both sleep trials also enrolled only adults with long-term insomnia, so neither describes people who sleep normally, and both are more than 30 years old.
