What ARA-290 is
ARA-290 is eleven amino acids long and made in a lab. It mimics part of the shape of erythropoietin, or EPO, yet it was designed to leave red blood cell counts alone. What it targets instead is a different receptor from the one that drives red blood cell production.
That explains its place in nerve research. Most of its studies ask about the small nerve fibers that are lost in some diseases, and about nerve pain.
What did the ARA-290 trials measure?
The biggest study noted here is a 2017 trial with 64 sarcoidosis patients, a disease that can strip away small nerve fibers. The 28 day trial set ARA-290 against a placebo and counted nerve fibers in the cornea, the clear front surface of the eye.
A 2015 placebo-controlled study, also 28 days long, enrolled people who had type 2 diabetes along with nerve pain, and it measured blood sugar control and pain scores.
Before that, a 2013 rat study of inflamed nerves tested touch pain and heat pain after the peptide; heat pain did not change.
